Gordon Guyatt, MD, MSc, is a physician and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics and of Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Guyatt has been a leading exponent of evidence-based approaches to clinical practice, having coined the term “evidence-based medicine” in 1990. He has published over 650 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and has also written extensively on health care policy in the popular press. In this podcast, he provides information on the sequential assessment of the quality of evidence, followed by assessment of the balance between benefits versus downsides and subsequent judgment about the strength of recommendations. This grading system – developed by the GRADE working group - allows clinicians to interpret the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and apply them for the management of their own patients. The interview was conducted by William F. Bria, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer, Shriners Hospital for Children, and Chair of the HIMSS/AMDIS Physician Community.
